At my many positions in my career, it has been said many times that “Communication is our number one priority.” During this never ending period of crisis, poor communication between people, cities, counties, states, and countries has caused just as much confusion and delay (quoting Sir Topham Hatt of Thomas the Tank Engine fame) as the actual multiple crises!
When something goes wrong at your jobsite/business (and it will), having exercised your communication skills ahead of time will help improve most issues. As a Database Administrator, you are in the unique position of understanding multiple components of the business, from the underlying hardware and OS, to the database, the data, the application, and hopefully the business and its users.
Due to this, you can be a big help in working with the business and HR and the department leads to come up with a comprehensive communication plan to cover these bases:
- A list of essential employees and their contact information
- A list of customers and the communication strategy depending upon the length of the outage
- Key support vendors that may be needed in various area
